I was sitting by the bed tonight with Caleb as he was settling down for the night. He reached over and put my arm around him, laying his hand on top of mine. Then he sat up and pulled his blanket over my arm, “Here go Mommy, you need cubers [covers].” “Thank you,” I said. “You wel-wom.” He sat up yet again a few minutes later, in an effort to avoid bedtime. But he said “I can kiss you again,” and kissed both cheeks. Again. And who am I to say no to that?
Last night, trying his avoidance tactics, after laying there quietly for 10 minutes or so, he plopped Charley on the pillow saying “It’s…it’s…it’s Cha-ley.” In sort of this “Heeere’s Johnny” tone, which Scott started. I can’t believe we ever worried about his lack of speech. I swear this child wakes up in the morning, takes a deep breath and talks ALL DAY LONG! And if he senses that you aren’t listening to him, he will keep repeating the same sentence over and over. If you don’t respond, he takes your face in his hands and pulls you toward him, repeating his sentence again while looking you dead in the eye, just to make sure. We were in a small toy store last weekend…one of those with really nice toys, like puppets, and Melissa and Doug puzzles, and such. Well he must have identified every single toy in that store. “Wook Mommy! Thomas the Train! Wook Mommy, a tractor, a red tractor, wook wook Wook!” I kept hearing the guy at the register giggling. He finally commented, “Wow, he talks better than some adults I deal with! How old is he?” I responded that he was almost two and a half, and was totally silent until his second birthday. “Wow” the guy said. The same thing I say every day. Wow. What did I do before I was a Mommy? What did I laugh at, what did I wake up for, why didn’t I know what I was missing?
