March 2005: He's here!!

Caleb Isaiah was born on Thursday, March 31, 2005 at 3:35 in the morning. He weighed a whopping 9 pounds and 6.8 ounces, and measured 21 1/2 inches long!

My labor went pretty fast. We spent most of Wednesday sitting around relaxing. I was expecting to get induced on Thursday or Friday. But little man had other plans, and my contractions began around 6pm. By 7:30, they were 45 seconds long and a minute and a half apart! We rushed to the hospital, and upon learning that I was 5 cm, I snatched the nurses collar, dragged her close and begged for drugs. Okay not really, but I certainly sobbed that I would like my epidural as soon as possible! If I hadn't gotten it, I think he would have been born on the 30th.

We stayed in the hospital until Saturday. I was so glad to get home, where I felt like he was actually mine, and not on loan from the nurses!

Happy Easter!

I took a box of Cadbury and Reeses eggs to the hospital with me. Yes to the hospital, I didn't even wait until I got home! Having gestational diabetes, I had to endure three holidays that normally involve chocolate, Christmas, Valentine's and Easter. A little slice of Heaven right there in my hospital bed!

The Hospital

Caleb refused to stay in the nursery! I only took him one time, and he screamed for an hour and a half straight, beginning immediately after we dropped him off. The nurse finally called me, and asked if they should feed him formula or return to sender. I heard him screaming as they pushed his bassinet down the hall, and as they crossed the threshold, he got silent and went right to sleep. Thus begun the first of many nights of demanding closeness.
