lightroom: week 1

I use Adobe Lightroom to edit my photos (which I don’t always do), largely because I don’t have Photoshop and I don’t have $1500 to get the Totally Rad Actions and Kubota imaging tools after getting Photoshop. Compromises, compromises. Not to say Lightroom doesn’t do a fine job, I just would like to more than Lightroom 1 allows (I don’t have experience with Lightroom 2).
I wish this picture had little bare feet, but it was spur of the moment, and of course once he took his socks off, he never sat like this again. Here is the SOOC – Straight out of the camera – version:

Even with socks on, I think the picture can still be made into a keeper with a little post processing. I think my favorites are probably #1, #3 or #4, depending on the feel I was going for. #7 too though. Anyway, these are probably my favorite and most used presets for Lightroom. I just recently started experimenting with presets, which are something like a cheat sheet in my mind. You can use them quickly and easily to bring a totally different feel to the photo, without all the work.
Left to right starting at the top left:
1. Wet Chrome 2. Metropolis 3. Fake it til you make it BW 4. Green Tint 5. x=mad+max+3200 6. x=summer+holiday 7. PH Naturally BW 8. x=warm+storm 9. x=smooth+as+velvia

I like! I was going to try to pick a favorite, but it’s too hard. I really like #2…but I guess it depends on the mood! Are you going to do a series like this?

Wow, that is really cool. I’m like you, I think. I want some good software to edit with, but it’s ridiculously expensive. Is lightroom free? I’m going to look into it.

I use Aperture for some editing, but it is sooo worth it to get photoshop. Really, you will never regret it. And while I have TRA, I don’t think I will ever bother with the Kubota stuff because I don’t think the price is worth it. I don’t know if you’ve heard of her, but the Pioneer Woman has some free actions that are pretty similar to some of the TRA ones because Doug Boutwell helped her make them. Here’s the link: http://thepioneerwoman.com/photography/2008/12/pioneer-woman-action-set-2-yahoo-yippety/ And there are cheaper actions out there too if you don’t want to spend a lot, here are a couple I’ve come across: http://www.indieactions.com/ and http://mcpactions.com/main.html (sorry if you already know this). But yeah, get photoshop and if you ever have any questions feel free to ask! I’m not an expert, but I’ve been using it a long time. (That’s what happens when your father is a graphic designer, you used adobe products instead of “paint”) And I love number 6 and 7. Little boys are so cute to photograph!

I love the way your spam protection works. Much MUCH better than trying to decipher mixed up letters!
Anyway, I like #2 and #8 the most =) And even though I have Photoshop, I have to admit that I *love* Lightroom. You can do so much with it =)
