Dec 01

Posted by: Rachel in: blog, caleb isaiah, current events, family, just another day in paradise, ramblings, rants, who wants to read this?

24 days left! I loaded up the advent calendar tonight. We have a Christmas tree box advent calendar (on the mantle in the picture). It has little doors that open to reveal compartments, which I loaded with various cookies and such. Scott got his Christmas present early today. He wanted a radio control helicopter. It seems pretty cool, although he has already broken one blade! They are only four dollars for a set of blades luckily. Video will surely follow when he gets the hang of it.

All three of us were standing, noses pressed to the storm door tonight, shinning a laser out on the porch and laughing hysterically at the cats scrambling to catch it. It doesn’t take much, we’re a cheap date for a Friday night. Caleb started laughing so hard last night, he snorted, which made him laugh that much harder. I never knew children’s laughs were so infectious.

Scott got in a fender bender tonight. He was having a nightmarishly hectic day at work. He drives one of those huge Chevy work vans. The ones with the cage right behind the driver’s seat, and painted windows. So obviously, he has a large blind spot. He has to use the side mirrors to back up. He was doing so very slowly since he knew this was a busy gas station. He was nearly out of the parking space when there was suddenly a white car in one of his mirrors. The driver was…how do I put this…one of those people that makes me say not so nice things. She jumped out of her car and said “You hit me!” He offered to simply exchange insurance information, but the woman was only worried about “who’s gon’ pay for my car.” So Scott called the police. As per usual, they were jammed up with calls. He passed two wrecks on his way to the gas station. When he called back, he found out that a robbery incident had been waiting over an hour, and another wreck close to an hour and a half. The woman was in and out of her car trying to blame everything on Scott. So he went in the store. The clerk and another person said (without even being asked) that the woman threw her car in reverse and backed up without looking. First she said she was on her way into the gas station to get gas, then she said she was parked right there. Scott specifically asked, “We backed into each other right?” “NO you hit me!”

Well after being told that the store employees had seen her, she mulled it over for a bit and the said she talked to the store employees herself and they said that the cops called and said they weren’t coming. Yeah, so they just said, sorry, we have too many cases right now, we can’t get to it today. She said “Can I just get your insurance information so I can get my car paid for?” You are kidding right? Scott tried to remain calm, as he told her that this wasn’t his fault, she backed into him and never looked. And that the police had been called and are required to respond to every call the get. “But you hit me in the rear, rear collisions are always the other person’s fault.” HUH??? That’s a rear end collision lady. What the hell? That applies to two cars going the same direction, the second person fails to stop and hits the person in front of them. When Scott made it clear that he was not admitting fault, and although it was taking forever, that he would be waiting on the police, and reminded her what the store employees had said, suddenly she changed her tune…”Do you just want to forget about this?” Scott told her that was entirely up to her. I was on the phone listening in the whole time. As soon as she got in the car, I told Scott to make sure he had her plates. Then he called the non emergency number back before moving the van. You guessed it. Hit and run. Leaving the scene. Ah Ha! The whole thing became funny to me at that point. She did the worst thing she could have possibly done. They told Scott he still needed to stay put for the officer, but he could get out of the middle of the parking lot. The officer wrote it up as a hit and run and said that the detectives would look into it and see if they would charge the woman. Never a dull moment!
