Kite day

Mar 26

Posted by: Dad in: blog

Well yesterday was kite day at Caleb’s school. I brought two kites for Caleb incase of loss or failure he would have another. There were about 40-50 dads there. Kites varried in size, color and design….everything from Barbie to box kites. The wind was percect and the sky was clear. Ever seen the cartoon where Mcwolf casts a fishing rod and the line gets all tangled from backlash…well there was a dad there that had the kite string looking that way and I felt really bad for him and his son…they ended up flying with a huge knot in the line. Well between the two kite Caleb had,the kite with the steamie was his favorite hands down. The steamie kite came with 300 feet of line and it took him about ten minutes to let it all out and he continued to fly it that way for the duration of the event. You would have thought Caleb was a master kite flyer with years of knowledge and experience. Well anyway hear are a couple of pictures and videos.

Kite day with Dad

This coming Friday is kite day with dad at Caleb’s school. I looked everywhere trying to find a Scooby Doo kite ….yeah no luck. Then I got the idea to try and find something train related and hit the jackpot…its a steamie engine kite but it alao matches one he has on the railroad….the southern green 4-4-0 ….not identical bit pretty close and I cant wait for him to fly it. I ordered it from ebay and was not sure it would be here on time so I went to Wal-mart and got a transformer “Bumble bee” kite…its a lot smaller than the train kite but its better to have something rather than nothing at all….anyway since the train kite made it on time I took Bumble Bee outside yesterday , now keep in mind I have not flown a kite since I was a kid…and was very suprised at how easy this $1.00 kite from Wal-mart was to fly I mean its just a single line kite…yes they have them that have more than one, but anyway it just flew its self I mean the wind just picked it up and took it away…..Caleb will have a blast. Here are a couple of pictures 2011-03-22_20-58-37_822 2011-03-22_21-00-10_300 2011-03-22_21-01-49_925

The mall here in town is all but deserted, there are only about 4-5 stores still open, however it makes a great place to safely ride bikes and drive r/cs . So after charging the Herbie truck battery and all the ones for the 2 xmods we were there to drive them. Caleb wanted to drive the Herbie truck first. There is a public entrance … well at least it use to be…where K-mart was, that is now locked all the time in fact you can’t get to those doors from the inside either, so I thought that would be a great place to drive the r/cs cause it has an awning over the wide entrance. so after about 15 min of Herbie racing back and forth Caleb clipped a support pole to the awning and sure enough it broke a control arm for the left front wheel…like I said earlier if it were a Wally World r/c it would be trash at this point but being its a Losi it is repairable , in fact the parts have already been ordered and will arrive in a few days…cost with shipping…$4.86.. and that gets me 2 upper and 2 lower control arms and only 1 upper is broken so we have extra next time it happens…time it takes to replace the broken part…about 20-30 min. So this is a perfect example of what I mean…heres the carnage2011-03-12_13-33-28_292 2011-03-12_13-32-58_221

Birthday

Here are a few pics of Caleb’s birthday stuff…first is the new roundhouse that has live track inside, after all what good is a roundhouse if you can’t drive in it. Roundhouses were built with lots of windows to help capture more natural light cause it was always dim and smokey inside and locos were driven in forward cause the engine was usually what was being serviced and in case of accidental throttle they would hit the stops at the back or at worst bust out some windows…shifting into reverse takes some deliberate steps and besides it would be very time consuming and difficult to lift an engine from the turntable pit…any idea how much they weight….  and since they were built to line up with incoming track they are kinda V shaped so there is more room and light at the back to work on the engines. Caleb has also wanted a r/c rock crawler like forever and the one I got is the smallest made and keeping with tradition its made by Losi so it is completely serviceable, so if or when something breaks it can be fixed….not like the cheap-o ones from Wally World. I also decided to get the bind and drive for two reasons…1. its a few bucks cheaper 2. he already has a transmitter that will link with it and it keeps from having another one to keep up with. Bind and drive means it does not come with a transmitter.  Well anyway here are the pictures and a short video of the roundhouse getting some action.  100_0485 100_0488 100_0486 I left the roof panels unglued in case anything goes awry.   100_0489 100_0490 100_0493 The engine on the left in the extended stall is his longest one …for now. 100_0494 100_0495
